Old San Juan Map: Getting Your Bearings

The old city is about seven blocks by seven, with a fort at each end and the water on three sides, and you can cross the whole of it on foot in twenty-five minutes. How the old city is laid out

Think of it as a rough rectangle on an islet. The east end is Plaza Colón and Castillo San Cristóbal, which is where you arrive from the rest of San Juan and where most tours meet. The west end is Castillo San Felipe del Morro on its headland. The south side is the bay, the cruise piers and the Paseo de la Princesa. The north side is the Atlantic, the cemetery and the neighbourhood of La Perla below the wall.

The streets run in a grid between those four edges, and they climb from the water in the south to the ridge in the middle. Calle de la Fortaleza and Calle del Cristo are the two you will walk most.

The two forts, and the walk between them

About twenty-five minutes, end to end, at a normal pace, and it is the walk almost every guided route here is built on. Going west to east it is downhill; going east to west it climbs. Where the tours actually meet

Eleven different places, and three products that publish none at all because they collect you from your hotel instead. This is the table to check before you book — a meeting point at the wrong end of the old city costs you twenty minutes you may not have.

Arriving by ship

Piers 3 and 4 are on the south shore, inside the old city. From them you are already in the district: Plaza Dársenas is a short walk west along the water and Calle Tetuán is a couple of blocks up. The Pan-American pier is the exception, and one operator states in its own meeting instructions that it is not within walking distance, so budget for a taxi or a ride app from there.

Arriving by car, and where to park

Use a garage. One operator's own booking notes tell drivers to allow time for parking and to use a garage rather than look for a space, which is the honest advice for a grid of narrow one-way streets laid out before the motor car. If you are staying elsewhere in San Juan, several tours here collect you from your hotel and remove the question.

The streets you will actually walk

Four of them carry most of the traffic, and knowing their names saves a great deal of pointing. Calle de la Fortaleza runs east to west from Plaza Colón to the gates of the governor's residence, and it is the street with the coloured umbrellas strung above it. Calle del Cristo crosses it and runs downhill from the Cathedral to the little chapel and the pigeon park at the bottom.

Calle Norzagaray follows the northern edge above the Atlantic, past the Ballajá barracks and the cemetery, and it is the natural way to walk between the two forts. Calle San Sebastián, one block in from it, is where the bars are and where the evening happens.

Everything else is a grid between those four, and the grid is small enough that getting lost costs you three minutes rather than thirty. If you are unsure which way is which, walk downhill: the water is always at the bottom.

The free trolley

The city runs a free trolley through the old city, and it is the usual way of getting from the piers up to the forts without the climb. Routes and frequency change, so treat it as a convenience rather than as something to plan a connection around, and check locally on the day.

If you only remember one thing

The water is always downhill and the forts are at the two ends. From anywhere in the grid, walking downhill brings you to the bay on the south side or the Atlantic on the north, and walking along the edge brings you to a fort. That is enough to navigate the entire district without a map, and it is why a guided walk here is bought for the history rather than for the directions.
